Use This Online Tool to Determine Veterans' Preference

Determine if you qualify for Veterans’ Preference by visiting the Department of Labor Web site and using the Veterans Preference Advisor online tool.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) administers entitlement to Veterans’ Preference in Federal employment under title 5, United States Code, and oversees other statutory employment requirements in title 5 and 38.

However, the veterans’ preference laws do not guarantee veterans a job, nor do they give veterans preference in internal agency actions such as promotion, transfer, reassignment and reinstatement.

  1. It's the 'however' statement that suggests the facade of Veterens' Preference, especially when you learn of the Act's original intent by Congress after WWII. Indeed, VP does not gaurantee a job for veteran (expect in special job categories for disabled veterans, such as elevator attendants). However, readers should realize that the civil service has dutifully characterized most announced jobs to prevent the application of veterans points (the instrument of veterans' preference) to a candidate's score. That means most of the announced jobs will be categorized as internal agency actions, often blatently done to prevent the possible hiring of a veteran. Be warned that the language of the original VP Act and today's spirit to actually hire veterans are contradictive. Job seekers beware.
